If someone sends me a MS powerpoint slideshow containing a lot of pics, and I want to extract a few and store them as seperate files, how can I do this? Is there any free software that I can download to do this?

Try opening it with Powerpoint.
Sun Open Office (Freeware) has a slideshow builder, you could try this.

Right click on the objects (eg pictures) in the SlideShow and choose "Save as"

Right click on the file and choose, Open with ... Power Point

Go to that slde and "Save as" ... but don't save as a Power Point, but as a JPG or GIF.

Save just "Current slide" then go thru and pick other slides you want

Good luck
