That is a good question. I think there is a distinct flavor to each. Like hash browns I will fry in butter. Fried potatoes I fry in virgin olive oil, tator tots and hash browns I generally deep fry in peanut oil. Since the tator tots are like made up of those little potato buds it seems to give them a different taste. Maybe it is all just psychological. If you go to breakfast for example the waitress will ask if you want hash browns or home fries. It is a preference also. I like hash browns, but when I have potatoes in the morning I will have fried potatoes. They are more convienient and less clean up.

It's not the cut that we distinguish. It's the spices and added items such as cheese, peppers, onions and gravy that change the taste. It also depends what is being cooked with the meal. We are raised to believe that hash browns go with eggs and bacon, Fries and Tator Tots go with hamburgers or chicken sandwiches and that fried potatoes go with a meat and vegetable for dinner.

Maybe not cut, but I can sure taste the differences when cooked. I love them all. Fried potatoes with chives and sour creme. French fries with gravy. Tator tots with chili and cheese. Hash browns with just about anything. Baked and loaded with whatever sounds good at the moment. Scalloped with extra sauce and cheese.
Potatoes are just the best & there's so many ways to cook them.

Yes, all begin as a potato and are then cut. However, each item is prepared in different ways. What we usually like is not how they are cut, but is whatever type of fat it is cooked in and what seasonings are added. No, we can't taste the way they are cut, but we can feel the texture of each type - shredded, crinkle cut, shoestring, minced, etc. We can taste the vegetable oil, butter, onion, seasonings, etc. I couldn't pick a favorite of those 4 - I like them all. I have a very good oven baked french fry recipe that requires no frying at all.

Off all the above, the Tator tots are the only ones that have any significant seasonings added; the rest may have a bit of salt...hmmm, they each have different textures, so I would say, YES!
