Good advice: to lose one lb of fat you must burn 3500 calories. To lose weight the big little secret (lol) is to just burn more calories in one day than you are taking in.

The smart way to loose weight is to find an eating plan you can live with forever. Don't think temproary diet, think changing the way you eat. It is slower, but offers longer term weight loss.
Also, increase your activity level. Experts agree that given a choice between limiting intake or increases burning calories, burning calories is better in the long run.
Again, find ways to burn calories that you can do forever. Walk daily, take up a more active hobby or sport, etc.
While liquid meals can help, most people find that the loss is very temporary that way.
Personally, I found that the 'malts' were a nice way to take the hunger pangs away as I shifted to smaller portions and better menus. Shifting from a malt to skim milk helped later on.

The key factor in Musclemilk is the Casein protein. If you drink a shake mixed with skim milk before bed it will help keep your body anabolic through the night. Casein protein is a slower absorbing protein (opposite of whey) that takes approximately 7 hours for your body to breakdown. I wouldn't recommend using musclemilk to replace a standard meal, using it to supplement a meal will work though. Cytosport claims (no medical evidence that I found) that the "leanlipids" in their mix is a fat with thermogenic properties that aids in weight loss.
I like it because of the Casein, and the fact that it tastes absolutely amazing. I drink the shake before bed and put 2 scoops in my oats (or granola) in the morning. Remember if you are going to be using it as a supplement shake in between meals you need to mix it with water as that will help cut down on the calorie level. I'd also suggest that you incorporate this into a weight training program that will help you build muscle mass (which will futher increase your metabolism and make it easier to lose weight)

Meal replacement shakes are good in that they have all the vitamins an minerals (just like taking a supplement).
I found that the meal replacement method of eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast and dinner helped me lose a few pounds, but you are starving all day by day three. It's too easy to "fall off the wagon", you know what I mean?
A method that I have seen works and is supported by "experts" like in Men's Health and Women's Health Magazines is to eat a balanced diet, but in addition to your exercise, try to eat all your carbs in the early part of the day: Breakfast and lunch. And keep your dinners light, especially if you tend to eat close to bedtime.
The best thing to do is try a few different diet/exercise combos and see which one you like and stick to that one. the more you enjoy the plan, the more likely you will stick to it.
Good luck!

Meal replacement drinks are great. In fact, I was reading an article that people eat so much crappy food, that most could benefit from a meal replacement drink simply to get the vitamins and nutrients they need.
Here's a really good one if you're interested.
