Cut and fit paper before pasting. Then paste and using the ring ends of the scissors slide it down behind the radiator. and using the scissors and fingers smooth it out.
If you make up something like a tee square and hold the long end and use the shorter end which is the tee use that to assist the smoothing. Get the paper down as far as possible but it is doubtful if you will get it all the way. It can't be seen below about 6 inches anyway. Then put a short piece of paper along the bottom edge by the skirting and poke it up a few inches. You will not see any more even if you stand back.
Hope you get the gist of what I am saying and good luck. I am a painter and decorator.

Once you have measured the paper you have to cut slits in the wallpaper from the bottom edge up to where the brackets/or screws are that fix the radiator to the wall. Also for any piping that may come through that part of the wall. Carefully attach a piece of cotton to each side of the wallpaper at the bottom. Paste the paper and whilst you hold it, get someone to pull the cotton threads carefully down the back of the radiator, from top to bottom, thus pulling the wallpaper down to the skirting. The slits in the paper will slide past the brackets etc. Have a spatula or similar handy to slide behind the radiator in case of creases. Good Luck.

Try lifting the radiator off its brackets and slightly away from the wall, but have an block to rest it on as they are heavy. Look at the gap between the brackets and think about where the seem will go. Try not to have to cut thin strips as they rip off easily. Allow plenty of Soak Time after you paste the paper so it becomes malleable. Smooth it down with a sponge roller or by pushing a piece of rag down behind the radiator. Don`t worry about your mistakes nobody is going to see them.

If you slacken the nuts on the pipes at each end of the radiator enough to tilt the radiator away from the wall and support at an angle while papering. This will only work if your pipes come from under the floor and not through the wall so that you have enough give in the pipes to allow you to lift the radiator off the mounting brackets and tilt it.A small amount of water may leak but just mop it up and bleed radiator when finished.

I'm impressed with the sheer dedication of all the people here who take off their radiators, or who take such trouble to paper behind without removing them. But, IMHO, this is dedication to a fault.

The less dedicated but more practical and commonplace answer however is that you only paper as far behind the radiator as you can easily do it, a few inches. Wallpaper is only decorative, and there's no point having decoration where you can't see it. Doing this will not affect the value of your house! Life is too short to do it any other way.

But, if there are big cracks in the wall behind the radiator, it's definitely worth taking it off, to paper over them properly (only joking).

i'd first seem to work out if there's a metal plate connected to the wall behind the radiator. it quite is used to assist reflect warmth from the radiator again into the room.. once you've one i'd recommend that you do not wallpaper it. The paper will shrink the nice and cozy temperature reflecting and shrink the performance of the radiator. If no longer any of the advice already suggested will paintings. wish this helps

With great difficulty but...
Did You Know...?
You can place a sheet of silver tin foil behind the radiator to reflect the heat back into the room, thus saving money on heating bills.
Don't use wallpaper, use foil, as I always say...

you really need to remove them but i found it not worth it because the paper just starts to come away from the wall behind due to the heat from the radiator, thats what mine did anyway.

Almost impossible: Do yourself a favour and find a friendly plumber to remove it for you, soon, before the winter comes.
