You will make out like a bandit, you get to keep the surplus money. It is not taxed and doesn't have to be returned to anyone. Hopefully this can be used to pay for other household expenses, like utilities.

BAH is not just for rent. It's there to offset all of your housing expense. That means all the utilities too. Once you add all the expenses in, I'm sure you'll be close to your BAH rate. They monitor these amounts closely and don't give us much room to spare. Don't worry about it. BAH is a set amount and if that's what you're authorized, that's what you get.

if this is BAH from the military, they will pay a flat rate, based on rank. It would be up to you to find housing either under or just at that rate or you would be responsable for the rest. so the answer to your question is that you are able to keep the rest of the money. If you are still unsure you need to talk to your section leader, sqaud leader, team leader and they will certianly point you the right direction.

you may keep it. the only time you do not get to keep any extra is if you are OCONUS. you get the amount of the rent, up to your OHA ceiling, and no extra.

Plenty of people do the smart thing and willingly choose a place to live that is under BAH. While in San Diego, our BAH covered rent, utilities, phone, cable and ISP.
