I was told a while ago by some one that because my husband is in the Air Force that I was "living off the government." Does anyone else agree? Why or why not? Why would someone think serving our country is the same as living off the government?
The reason this is in Pregnancy and Parenting is because the woman said I wasn't a good parent because my husband was in the military and we were "living off the government."

"I have a question"--You know what I think is sad. I think it's sad that you can not drop a subject. I may not agree with you on some issues but I'm not going to be immature and judgmental over something in a different question. I think that's very petty and extremely immature! And to call someone a bad parent. That is horrible! I would never call someone a bad parent just because they believe differently then I do.

I don't even care to argue with you. My best friend and I happen to argue abou t this and other touchy subjects all the time. We argue, we laugh, and we move on. As a Christian you should know that it is not our job on earth to judge. People who do get abortions will have to be judged by Him and that is far greater then anything we could do.
I'm ignorant? You're ignorant. You can't just leave something be.
I am an excellent parent and will not participate anymore in your immaturity. So thank you for providing the videos. That is great. I would not choose abortion for me but don't want to make that unavailable for everyone else.
God gave us the choice of free will. Let people use it! Their day will come. Let it be!

My husband is in the military and we living in on post housing. You know as well as I do the military doesn't pay the greatest un less you are an officer. Your husband is in an honorable position. Don't worry about what people say, I am always hearing rude comments about having a military family. Just stay strong and be proud of you and your man. It is a lot of work being a military wife and mom and sometimes having to be a fill in dad too. Keep up the good work.

That lady is full of crap. The military doesn't pay as well as some other companies, but it has awesome benefits. My husband is in the military as well. Had he not been in the military and we have Tri-care, we would be in so much debt right now from hospital bills. (I got really sick and would have ended up paying over $80,000 in hospital bills)
Anyone who thinks that being in the Military is "living off the government" should give it a try sometime. Try having your spouse deployed for months at a time. Try worrying all the time that something will happen to them while they are deployed. Not knowing if they will come home safely. Granted, the benefits are really good, but that doesn't replace the fact that someone you love is hundreds or thousands of miles away at times, and you don't get to see them at all.
Also, I agree with what was said about peolpe in the military getting paid crap compared to the civillian side of things. My husband makes about $40,000 a year after taxes. Sure, that sounds decent, but if you think about it, in his field in the civillian side, he would be making close to if not more than $100,000. HUGE difference. These people serve in the military because they want to, not because they want to "live off the government" Living off the government is welfare, social security, people that don't have jobs yet get a check every month for doing nothing. I was in the military myself before I had my first child. I would go back if I didn't have my girls to take care of. It is a good job. Rewarding too, knowing that you are not working to support your family, but also that you are helping your country.

For starters, who ever judged your parenting skills that away because your husband is Air Force is an idiot... My husband is Air Force and that doesn't determine how good of a parent I am... I think I'm a great mother for my children and We don't live off the government; My husband earns a paycheck just like all other Legal U.S. citizens do... I think that the person who said you're living off the government is just jealous of some of the privileges that we have.... Granted most people think we get more than what we do... My family lives off base and we pay for our rent and utilities just like everyone else... I have to buy my groceries with the paycheck that my husband earns just like everyone else... We don't have any money left over so I don't see how I'm living off the government when we're just barely getting by... Now if I got Food Stamps or Social Security stuff like that then I would be living off the government... Some people are just not educated in the world of military families... Just ignore them... You know that you're a good parent and that you don't live off the government...

In a time of war, I am appalled that someone would such a narrow minded comment. You and your husband are both doing a great service to our country with you be a military wife and him serving in the armed forces. I know from experience (I was a Navy wife for 7 years) that military personnel and their families live way below the poverty level and that base pay does not even cover the amount of hours that most soldiers put in.
Don't let someone's ignorance shape your role as a mother and a military wife. Just know that he is working and doing his job and is being compensated with a steady salary and health insurance (something that all people should strive for).

I think of collecting welfare as living off the government. Your husband works for this company which happens to be the government. He has a high risk job and can be sent away from his family into life threatening situations for months or even years before he can return home. The pay isn't great but the benefits make up for that so how can anyone think this is a bad parent.
I'm guessing this person was probably opposed to the war in Iraq and was taking her frustrationsl out on you. Whatever anyones view of this war or administration, it is not fair to take it out on the men, women and families who are living with it everyday.
And think of the example that is being set for your children! They have their very own hero right at home.

You're not living off the government. Sadly, people in this country really look down upon those who require aid, but no one ever looks down at our society for not ensuring better social services to it's people. Other countries have free health care, and here the cost of insurance goes up and up and up every year. Why can't our taxes help to take care of each other more? Why can we give a small hand to everyone instead of a free handout to just a few?

If your husband is in the military you have every right to receive the benefits. Your husband is fighting/working for our country's safety and nobody has a right to say anything about that. The hell with those people that say that! They have some nerve! I don't have my husband in the military but I can just imagine how it feels to be scared that he will get deployed..come one now..these people need to lay off!!! They're probably people that have a man and go beg at the welfare office for money and foodstamps..now that's living off the government. Be proud of your military man, girl!

My dad used to get this when he was in the Navy, "I pay your salary." And dad would say, "You must feel pretty bad for me, then. As a taxpayer, I'm paying my own salary." Not to mention everything you give up to serve your nation in the armed forces.
Besides, all Americans should have universal health care and at least three years paid maternity leave. Then we could all live 'off the govt' or 'off ourselves' or off the wall or whatever that person who says this to you thinks...
I also think it is far better for a mom to go on welfare and actually raise her own kid than separate from her infant/toddler and go earn a few meager dollars. Far better for the child and the nation.

Her comment is/was completely uncalled for. Like you I am a military wife. My husband is in the USMC. To say we are living off the government is stupid. They go to work every day just like any other working person. They just happen to be employed by the U.S. government. I have always thought that living off of the government is recieving public assistance , i.e. Welfare, AFDC etc. If we live off the government would mean that every one in the U.S. lives off the government. I bet when she gets her tax return check from the government every year she isn't bitching and moaning then.

Our husbands are hero's! Hero's get paid crap (ex. teachers, cops, fireman, soldiers). No one else has a job where they leave their families for months to years at a time and work in horrible conditions. It is easy for people to say things like that when they are hiding behind their keyboards.
To "I have a question" I thought this was a government assistance question. How the hell did you turn it into an abortion issue?
