I don't know about your area, but I am against taking puppies to pet smart their trainers are not well trained. Do some reseach take your puppy to a well known place around your area. make sure they require that all pets are up to date with their shots, you don't want your puppy to get sick from dogs who have parvo or something.

I am sorry, since I am in the US, I can't answer your question, but I did feel that I had the responsibility to offer some suggestions about socializing a puppy. Please excuse me if Parvo is not a problem there.

Guidelines for puppies:

1. Don't take the puppy to the front yard, park, for a walk around the block, or to pet stores. These are all places where infected dogs have been or presently are. Even walking or driving in an area allows the possibilty of bringing the virus onto your property via car tires and shoes.

2. Only have the puppy around adult dogs that YOU KNOW are current on vaccinations. There should be no contact with stray dogs or dogs that you are not sure of. There is even some theories that vaccinated adult dogs can be carriers of Parvo and not be ill themselves.

3. Do not let the puppy be exposed to any other puppies. These pups could be incubating the disease (and therefore be contagious) without showing signs of illness.

4. Always wash your hands after handling any dog before touching your puppy.

5. Try keeping a puppy as isolated as possible from other dogs until it has completed its vaccinations.

First, make sure that the puppy is vaccinated and has his boosters (there are about 4 series). Putting a young dog in an atmosphere with other dogs is the best way to contract viruses.

I would suggest that you look for a trainer and/or breeder. Ask around. Call local kennels and breeders, they will know of something.

You could also try petsmart. I would highly advise against it though. Their employees only need to have three weeks of experience to start working with dogs- someone in there position(dog trainer) should have 10 to 20 years of experience. They aren't that knowledgable, and they are more costly than a professional trainer.

Good luck

Try the website for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers(APDT) www.apdt.co.uk - they can give you the contact details of an approved trainer in your area.

Well recommended but visit the class first without your puppy to see what it is like. APDT trainers use kind, effective reward-based training.

Avoid anywhere that is noisy with lots of barking dogs and people shouting. Well run classes should be relaxed and enjoyable with no compulsive, confrontational and punitive methods of 'training'.

Sorry, can't name specific places, but you could try Yahoo! Maps and search for 'puppy classes'. I found great hairstylists in Columbus that way.

And if you want info on classes, check out these sites:

Contact APDT as Dogdoc suggested. Also phone your vet they will either run classes or they will at least know who does. Good Luck

pet smart has some. they arent the best, but its a start to at least let your dog be around other pets its age, and there is supervision so its good. but they can also learn the basics there, like sit and laydown. so i think its worth it
