I tend to have recurring depression, and I started taking Effexor XR a week ago. My symptoms have begun to improve, but I find that my emotions (both positive and negative) aren't as intense as they used to be. Has anyone else here had similar experiences?

Thats to bad you are not feeling even the good emotions because I thought you had the best post to my question and looked you up. You work in a health food store which is really groovy. You think well. You also seem like someone that would be nice to get to know.
Sorry I'm not saying much about synaptic nerve gaps, neurotransmitters, limbic / endocrine systems and such that your question was about. That will be/ is answered in the other posts here I'm sure.
Hope this makes it past the numbed sensation and makes you feel something good. Peace.

yes, i have been on effexor xr for almost 4 years now. i have found that i do feel better and i deal with problems in my life better, but i am numb to feelings that i used to love feeling. like love and hurt. i understand that i was depressed and didn't want to feel down all the time anymore, but i like feeling some of my emotions. sometimes i feel like i just don't love like i used to. i actually divorced my husand, which was not becuase of the meds, we had a bad marriage the whole time we were married. but i think the medicaiton helped me through all that. i never cried one day after i left him. but i find it hard to have feelings for anyone. i don't have feelings of hornyness or love or sad becuase of not going out. i don't think i care one way or another most of the time. i tried switching medications to zoloft once, but at that time me and my boyfriend were breaking up and i had a major panic attack. so i had to start taking the effexor again. it is really hard also when you are on effexor, if you miss one dose you will feel it the next day. you will feel sick and dizzy. it is not a medicaiton you can just stop taking and please dont. it can casue you to do things you would not normally do. if it works for you that is great. but just discuss with your doctor about the dosage. if you don't like the effects, talk to your doctor and try a different mediation. i wish you all the luck in the world.

The same thing happened to me on Effexor XR. I would invesitigate another medication. Talk to your doctor. I hated the numb feeling with that drug, I starting hurting myself, just so I could feel something. I didn't feel anything.

It takes a long time to get the right drug or combination of drugs to treat depression.

Yes, definitely. I take the same drug. It's a common effect of all SSRI's.
