My Husband is in Iraq and this is his 4th time deployed. He retires in 5 years, how many times do you think he will have to go back? Is there no limit and I read somewhere that within so many years of retirement they try to get you settled somewhere without deploying. Anyone know? He has mentioned jobs on base that will not require him to deploy, like recruiting, teaching or training in weapons just until he retires. Are those hard jobs to get? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!

My hubby has been in 18 years and has deployed 3 times. He'd be there a 4th time right now, but he got selected for Drill Sergeant. The times he did go, he went as a unit. None were requested or volunteered. He'll come off the trail 6 months before his retirement. We've heard about this stabilization to retire, but who knows. It's the Army. It's been an adventure. As far as jobs to not deploy, yes, Drill Sergeant and Recruiter don't deploy. They're not always easy to get into though. He'll have to submit a packet unless he's selected. Then he'll have to go to school and depending which he does, you'd probably have to PCS. I don't know of other jobs than those. Oh yes, both of those are only 2 year assignments. Right now, hubby was told they're not accepting anyone for a 3rd year as a Drill Sergeant because he was going to do that and just retire on the trail so there would be no chance of PCS or deploying. However, that ended that thought. We'll just have to wait and see what happens, pretty much like everyone else.

Good luck!!

He does not have to go back unless he wants to. And I am pretty certain it has been that way the last three times he deployed.

Maybe you should ask him why he keeps going back, maybe it will surprise you that he believes in what he is doing, he has a higher calling.

Maybe you should support your husband in what he wants, I assume of course he has always supported you.

I was deployed once, 1967 and basically never came back, not as I went. Not sure if I would have reupped. I believed but did not get the chance. Your husband is doing a good thing, he really is. To risk ones life for your country is an honor. I would do it again I believe.

Depends on what service and job he is in. I have been voluntarily deployed 6 times over the years, Depending on the service there are limits that he may go but alot of factors. He may volunteer to go more, but........... As far as the other job, they are there and back again to his job they may be restriction on him getting them.. He needs to request them through his supervision to apply.

I am not in the military, nor was I ever in the armed forces, so I cannot directly address your question. What I can comment on though is that your husband’s continual redeployment to Iraq underscores just how much the Bush administration has botched the operations in Iraq. It’s a sad testament to our political process when we enter into an armed conflict as large as the Iraqi one, and don’t assess accurately the necessary manpower and resources to complete the job in a timely fashion. I know it is not worth much, but I apologize on behalf of this incompetent government for putting your husband and your family through this turmoil.

3 times-durations were 3 months, 8 months, 4 months. None were voluntary (or to Iraq) but I did eventually enjoy those times
