If my dog finds a worm on the field when I take him for a walk, he exposes it by parting the grass from around it with his nose, and then rolls in the worm, head first.

Dogs are natural predators at heart they still share the jeans of there ancestors the wolf.
Hard wired into there genetic make up is this predator instinct and this tells them to mask or cover up there natural odour dog sent, so in order to do this they roll in stinky stuff like dead fish or worms, after they do this they can sneak up on there prey and get a little closer with out being detected by the well equipped prey.

Yes// even if they find a small dead bird.. they roll on the bird.. I have never found out why.. There just does not seem to be any logical sense to it at all.(dog sense I mean)

My dog has rolled in dead frogs, dead worms, dead spiders. It is pretty strange. My old family dog used to roll in the crap of wild animals. I know it stinks, literally.
