Although I don't pay rent, food, or utilities, I help out by washing my own clothes, doing my own dishes and cleaning up my own room Should I tell her she is being unreasonable, or just move out?

I think you're going to get a lot of flame answers here... I will try not to do that but I will say that you should move out. Taking care of your own mess is a given, it should be taken for granted that you do that...it's not HELPING OUT. If you want to stay you have to pay rent, and help with food/utilities/etc. If your mom has allowed you to stay this long, I'm sure she would probably let you if you paid rent and stuff, but if you're paying rent and stuff, why not get your own place? You'll get used to it. You will both be happier and have a better, more healthy relationship.

Sorry to say this but if you are 38 years old and not paying rent, utilities, etc, I'd ask you to leave, too. Of course you want o stay you've got it made there...living for free. It's time to grow up and fly away. Besides at 38 aren't you ready to have your own life, your own place to call home? Move on!

She doesn't want you around anymore. She feels you should learn to be on your own. For fcuk's sake, you're THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS OLD... I moved out when I was about 21. Geez, what are you waiting for, medicare? You're staying there becuase you don't have to spend any money except on yourself (partying, clothes, etc.) She has to pay for the house, the food, the heat, the electricity, etc. who care's if YOU'RE happy there? Give her a fcukin break! Maybe she wants some time alone and you're always there. You're like a baby bird... OK, a big fat lazy baby bird , and she's trying to push your lazy azz out of the nest. Fly, motherfcuker! I mean, what do you do when you meet a woman, take her back to your room with your Lord of the Rings posters on the walls, and listen to your mom in the kitchen making dinner? You're nearly 40!!! Grow the fcuk up! And forget what some of these other people are saying. Just because you pitch in with the bills is NOT the answer. She probably feels like a failure because she raised a son who can't take care of himself. It's not about the money, it's about someone growing and developing as a well-rounded person. You can't do that when you're still depending on your mom for the most basic things in life. so you wash a plate every now and then... big fcuking deal. Get out and be a MAN!!!

Wow, this reminds me... I have to return "Failure to Launch" to the video store...

At 38 years old, if you're still living at home you should be paying rent. Teenagers are doing their own washing and cleaning up. If you work, you should pay rent period.

Why should your parents continue to support you? Start giving your parents rent money or get out of their house and into your own place.

If you like living there offer to pay rent food etc. depending on how old you are you may just want to move out. Moving into a new place is fun you get new stuff and you will feel more grown up

Your mom is probably ready to experience freedom; she has raised you, fed you and clothed you for many years and is ready for a much needed alone time now! You are quite capable at this age to be out on your own and doing for yourself! She's been there for you all these years and wants to know that you're going to be able to make it on your own! A mom has to be able to retire from parenting too! It's stressful to raise children now days and IS a full time job! Don't take advantage of your Mom's kind heart, let her relax and enjoy the rest of her life like she deserves! She's taught you all she knows, make her proud! You'll be fine and can always go to visit her! Good luck!

You're not going to want to hear this but... "Thou art a leech!"
Stop sponging off of mom. So you do a few chores, you should. But you should also be paying half of the utilities/food. No wonder you're happy, you don't have to pay for crap you selfish bastard. You're happy and snug as a bug in a rug (no pun intended). For God's sake man, you're thirty-freaking-eight!!! For once, start thinking about your mom and not yourself. Give her the gift of some peace & quiet (and privacy).

Did you ever stop to think that your MOM wants to be alone for a while. You are 38 rears old and pay nothing to live there. MOOCH!!!!! If she asked you to leave then LEAVE!!!!!!
All you are doing is teenage chores. A real MAN would be paying half of everything. I know you are her son, but she raised you and did her job no stop being a mooch and go!
