Well there are some common signs that may point to dyslexia. Like trouble reading and spelling. Missing words or entire lines when reading. usually these problems are most noticeable when the person reads out loud. My biggest problem showed up when copying information from a chalk board and doing my math homework. However these sign don't necessary mean your child is dyslexic, there could be other causes. If you believe he is you should consider testing with a psychologist.
Also if he is dyslexic and treated there is no reason he can't succeed. I was diagnosed as a child and through a lot of work I have done fairy well. I am a college graduate and even make a living as a computer programmer, and yes occasionally I still find I miss things but you learn to manage. A good resource for parents is listed below.

Many parents freak out because of reversals in letters. If that is the case, relax! Teachers don't worry about problems with reversals until the end of second grade.
Dyslexia is much more complicated than just letter reversals:
mixes up diections
can explain things but has trouble doing it in sequential order and substitutes inappropriate words
has difficulty remembering
can hear a story and know what it was about but can't retell it in the same order.
when reading child may skip whole lines etc...then goes back up after he has read two or three lines...there is no subsequent pattern for him on the paper
copying is completely frustrting for them
If your child exhibits those symptoms, tell the school an his doctor...there are dyslexia facilities in most big cities that will test the child.

Well it really depends. What kind of dyslexic do you think he is? I am dyslexic but it is not the type that you mix up numbers and letters and that sort of thing. The type of dyslexia I have cause me to be very unorganized and not able to say what I'm thinking. I'll know what I want to say but can't really put it into words. If this is the kind of dyslexia you think your son has, talk to your schools to get him tested and if he is positive, get a doctor specializing in dyslexia to work with him. It worked for me!

Just give him some extra time. Reading may be something he just can't grasp as easy. My son was diagnosed as dyslexic in first grade. Not only was I crushed, but so was he. I was so worried about how badly his self esteem would be affected by this. Now my son is in fourth grade and reading well above all his class mates. It took him longer to "get it", but now he has made up for it. Good luck to you.
