I was just wondering how many familys know of the evacuation system set up for their schools and what it involves.

I ask because of the number of violent acts taking place at our schools.

Actually my daughters school didn't send home paren/student handbooks. They havn't and this is the third year we have been with this school. They don't have us re-register our children either.

Yes I do, and its actually a part of that parent handbook that you signed at the beginning of the year that you read (and you really didn't)

It may surprise you what is in it.

For instance in my daughters private K4-12 school, the plan for evacuation in case of a chemical or biological spill is for all the kids who can't drive get in the cars of the kids who can drive and go to a spot determined at the time of the evacuation.

SCARY!!

Yes, at my school we have plans for just about any type of emergency: fire evacuation, intruder alert, lock down, short range evacuation and long range evacuation. We practice with the children several times a year, so that in the eventuality of a real alert, the children will be well prepared. However, we don't publish these plans in the parent handbook. If asked, we are more than happy to share any and all information with the parents. By the way, my school was 1/2 mile from several of the sniper incidents in Maryland back in 2002, so perhaps we are more aware than most schools about the importance of being prepared.

I'm sorry to hear that your school is not imformative. By law every school building has to have an evacuation plan and more recently a lock-down plan. These are to be tested a certain number of times each school year. I would speak with you school about it. If you don't get any answers go to the administration and then to the board of education in your district.

Every school must have the poste evacuation procedures listed in each room.
Tornado
Fire
Other: Bomb and lock down procedures
It wouldn't be in the handbook, because every room is different in the building....

since school started we have had a tornado drill, fire drill and our first lockdown drill last week.
Two years ago we had an actual lockdown alarm that lasted almost two hours. There was a man wanted for murder that was seen two blocks from our school.
Our school has a phone system that notifies all the parents in case of an emergency during school hours
