Nope, you can get one on arrival.

"British citizens and other British passport holders who produce evidence of the right to reside permanently in the UK can visit for up to six months without a visa." (http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ then click on the link Visa-Free Countries on the left of the screen, and scroll down in the new window that opens)

If you decide to go to Australia you will need one in advance.

If by saying 'as a UK citizen' you mean you are a UK passport holder and have the right to live in the UK permanently, then you do not require a visa to enter New Zealand as long as you comply with the following:

You intend only to holiday here
Your intended stay is for less than 6 months
You are holding a return ticket to the UK
You have sufficient money with you to support yourself while in NZ (this demonstrates that you do not intend to work illegally)
Your passport must have an expiry date more than 3 months beyond your intended date of leaving NZ

If you comply with the above, entry will be granted to you at NZ Immigration on your arrival here. Otherwise you will need to obtain a visa before you leave the UK.

No you don't.

On a practical level, they are very hygeine concious so make sure you scrub the soles of any boots and shoes you are taking with you, and don't take any foodstuffs at all. I took my son a homemade cake and it was confiscated at the airport in Christchurch.
