Im Emily and Im 13 years old. I live in Singapore so it may be different in the US. I want to go to the doctor and consult about my periods. It has been 4-5 months now. I know I'm still beginning to have periods but this is sort of long? I've been under stress lately, Singapore is a very tough place. In schools, we have exams every 3 months. Now, Im going through my final year examinations which are very important for me to pass on to the next level. Could this be the reason why my period is absent? Anyway, I plan on consulting a doctor, what do you think he would do to find out the problem? He wont examine me, will he? I wouldnt want that if he is going to check out my body.

If you just recently started, it's normal for them to skip a few months. Stress can be a factor as well.

I would say first you need to consult your parents, at least your Mom or some other adult you can talk to you about your periods. It is normal to skip periods, but just to be sure a doctors appointment is probably a good idea. He or she will examine you but it is not a painful experience, you might feel embarrassed but just remember that the doctor sees women all day and they don't think a thing about it. Also, you might have some pressure during the examination; this is also normal and no need to worry. The physical exam doesn't take long at all; probably 5 minutes at the most and then you are done. It will be worth it in the long run; stressing over school is bad enough, but then on top of that you are worried about your periods; so the doctor could bring you peace of mind. Good luck sweetie.

Stress could be causing your irregular period, or it could just be that your hormones aren't regular yet. If you go to a doctor, chances are that he will do an exam. If you are having periods, you should be having yearly exams, pap smears, every year. I know the first exam is pretty scary, but it would be better to have the exam done and know that nothing is wrong than to be unsure why you are missing your periods. You could have a health issue that needs to be treated.

The exam doesn't hurt for more than a moment, and it doesn't mean you aren't a virgin anymore (I've actually heard that as an excuse not to go to the doctor.) You're better off getting checked out then letting it go. Good luck.

Hi Emily - your doctor might do a gynecological examination, if he decides it is necessary to properly diagnose you. However, your doctor probably won't do anything you're not comfortable with. One option is to get a female doctor, who might put you more at ease if you're uncomfortable.

As to your irregular periods - that's perfectly normal in the first few years of menstruation. Your body is still developing, and your hormones will take a few years to balance out; when they do, your periods should become more regular.

I doubt he would examine you. He would probably just ask some questions. But it is very normal for you to skip periods at this age. Your period won't be regular for 1 to 2 years after you start. Even then grown women skip them too. We have irregular periods all the time. I wouldn't worry too much.

Emily, Don't be scared to go to a doctor. If they check your body out, it's in your best interest. It's not something to be embarrased about, and no doctor would ever be embarrased by it or make you feel that way, or feel uncomfortable. Talk to your parents about what's going on, and maybe your Mom can go go the doctor with you, and if you feel more comfortable, perhaps you can go to a female doctor. A GYN doctor would be the best type of physician to see. Good luck and keep up the good school work.

Of course he will check out your body. He'll do a full exam, internal and external.

It seriously is more common for children to skip periods than not. I skipped once at a teenager for 9 months because of stress.

Its perfectly normal. You should calm down and enjoy the extra time :)

Girl, you are only 13, it is very normal to just starting out your periods irregularly. And stress definitely doesn't help either. Just remember, Girls in Asia tend to start a little later than the US counterparts, because they are usually more petite and have less fat.

I waited till i was 20 to go and that was to long, all because i was scared for nothing, go to the doctor take your mom or somebody else you trust and go.
