Don't, its his comfort . When he gets older and if he continues to do it , then I'm sure he will do so at home only.....still giving him comfort. " what will be will be ".......

My son is now six years old and still likes to suck his thumb. He cut down when he started school and now he plays with his friends he doesn't do it in their company. He is now old enough to understand, so I have explained to him the damage he will do when his adult teeth come through. He has, in the last few months, hardly sucked his thumb at all. He will grow out of it and I'm glad I didn't listen to every ones nagging and try to stop him sooner, as it would have caused heartbreak all round. Good Luck!

the more you try the more he will want to do it. Some can be bribed some just grow out of it depends when and why he sucks it if its a comfort thing it could be difficult .
try distracting him by giving him things to do so he cannot suck it during the day
The worst thing you can do is worry about it both my sons sucked their thumbs they are adults now and don,t suck their thumbs they did it for comfort or when they were tired. We tried anti nail bite stuff but they just sucked the other one. he won't suck it for ever

Mine is 31mths old and still does it, her teeth are beginning to go a bit, but then they'll fall off and I'll start worrying about it then.
I sucked my fingers until I was 12 and made myself stop because my mum couldn't afford my teeth being fixed if I messed up beyond 16. I stitched old socks to my pyjamas for several weeks and it worked a treat.
If you're no good at stitching, fear not, you can buy pyjamas for eczema ridden kids:

I bet the cayenne pepper thing works but what if you have a kid allergic to chilli and stuff?
I think he's a bit young to be weaned off, but then if it's important for you to stop him, you're his boss!
by the way, having been through the polish thing, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that all you need to do is scratch it off your nails with your teeth and spit it out...
Oh and it's not the end of the world to wear braces for a few months...

Why would you want to make him stop! I am 35 and still suck my thumb when I am reading or watching tv and when I go to sleep. I don't do it in front of people and I don't have buck teeth but I do still find it comforting. I am sure you would rather have your child feeling secure and comforted rather than forcing societies rights and wrongs on him

Theres nothing wrong w it. He'll stop when hes ready. This is his way of comforting himself..and theres no harm being done.
The dental association states..that dental problems from thumb sucking..occurs only if the child is still sucking their thumb when their "adult" teeth come in...and not before.
This too..shall pass.

I have seen a solution at Babies R Us that is suppose to assist, by putting it on their thumbs, but I do not know if it works. From my experience, if you do not make a big deal about it, they will end up stopping on their own. If you do make it a big deal, they use it to get attention.

to all those who suggested let the child suck thier thumb are u mad a child groes with a habit wen teeth come in constant sucking will pull teeth forward and cause dental probs in the future i.e. braces i know that is the reason i had mine
i would dip in lemon juice or rub and onion anything that tastes absolutly foul will last long and is safe maybe something the child hates to eat my daughters would b oranges

Don't worry about it. All kids are different and he's still less than two. He may suck his thumb whilst asleep for many years yet. Just accept his little eccentricities - its what makes kids so wonderful.

as a farther of 2 I have been in your situation twice and second time round got it right.
DO NOT USE A DUMMY !
they are a real wrench to ween off and if they are young when they are removed they dont miss them.
you need to make sure you find a hard fruit which will be enjoyed and will keep him occupied while teething.
cut up small pieces of apple for example and supply when hand approaches mouth.
keep persisting.
good luck
