The BCA, which is the North American representative of the WPA, addresses this question under rule 3.31 of the General Rules of Pocket Billiards.

"A hanging ball that falls into a pocket 'by itself' after being motionless for 5 seconds or longer shall be replaced as closely as possible to its position prior to falling, and play shall continue."

M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee

we play by BCA rules also as stated above, but theres another branch of league rules in my state. anyways during the 2005 north dakota state mens divison 8 ball tournament in the final match of the tournament this happened in that match, this guy was on the 8 ball and shot it and it hung in the pocket, the other guy got up to shoot and played for 2 or 3mins into the game he was not even shooting near where the 8 ball was and suddenly it just dropped in after 2 or 3mins it then was up to the tournament drector to decide and both players were on the wire as far as games it was win or lose and they decided that they would call it a win. which i thought was a horse chit ruling also all the people there were outraged. this was no small tournament either 327 men played in it. so as far as ur question it could be decided in many ways it just all depends were u are and whos running the tournament.

"Straight" is correct......if the ball "hanged" there for more then 5 seconds it is then spotted as close to where it was before....happended to me once to my opponent shooting the 9 ball....talk about a stink.....the Tournament director came over and settled it with this same rule.....
