my 5month old staffy has had a kennel cough for about 2 weeks. It is not as persistant but mainly of a night he'll have the cough like he's got something stuck in his throat. The vet recommended a child cough mixture which i've tried to no avail. Any ideas?

The vet needs to re examine the pup, then give you a steroid medication to help with his treceha swelling that is causing the cough....It has to be completly cleared from his respiratory as well....I got my last rescue pit in with severe kennel cough, took her back 3x to get the correct medicine....it has since gone and she is good.....Good Luck

It sounds like kennel cough, as it is mainly happening at night. The only thing you can do is give it some more time...it's like when we get bronchitis (that nighttime gagging cough). Try not to take your puppy to a kennel until he is at least a year old...he is also at risk of catching Parvo there...even if he is immunized. Hire a professional pet sitter to come to your home if you are away. And there are people here saying the vet should have prescribed something, but that is not true...kennel cough is a viral infection, and an antibiotic only works on a bacterial infection...don't overmedicate your pet, because one day when he really needs antibiotics they won't work as well!

If he's really got kennel cough, he needs more than a cough syrup! He'll need to go on antibiotics (doxycycline) for at least 2 weeks to control the infection.

If the cough doesn't clear up for awhile (even with antibiotic treatment), you might want to request for a chest xray with your local veterinarian.

It is also worthwhile getting your dog vaccinated against kennel cough the next time he gets his shots.

Good luck! :)

You should try using a Nebulizer. It is a misting machine that helps clear airways. I used it for my puppy when he had kennel cough.

Your vet should have given you a scrip for something that will clear it up. Go to another vet.
