A permanent mark or design on the skin made by cutting the skin to produce scars or by inserting coloring matter under the skin. The Israelites were forbidden to engage in this practice, one that was common among some other ancient peoples. (Le 19:28) For example, there were times when the Egyptians tattooed the names or symbols of their deities on their breast or arms. By complying with Jehovah’s law not to disfigure their bodies, the Israelites would have stood out as different from other nations. (De 14:1, 2) The prohibition would also have impressed upon them a proper respect for the human body as God’s creation, to be used in honoring him.—Ps 100:3; 139:13-16; Ro 12:1.

It's kinda like when your mom said "If so and so jumped off a bridge, would YOU?". I am going to assume that you maybe go to church and might be trying to win favor with God by 'works', and not really a born-again believer. So, after reading all the answers, I only want to say that tattooing today is like a mass craze, and even Christian's could be sucked into it. Christians are not 'under the law'. But, if you are a Christian, then maybe you should ask God if you should get a tattoo and tell Him that you think it would bring glory to Him! LOL I would love to hear what He tells you, but I think I already know.
We are to be separate (meaning don't do the same things) from the 'world' and unbelievers. Soooooooooo, if this mass craze is of the flesh, and worldly, do you really think you can condone it for yourself?

Hi...
Much has been already said in answer to your question, but let me give it a shot. First of all, among the early Christians, it was pretty much common knowledge that the customs of the 'people of the nations' were not to be imitated, but rather, the followers of Jesus were to be " No part of the world" ( John 17:16 ). Also, in 1 Timothy 2:9 it is stated " Likewise I desire the women to adorn themselves in well arranged dress, with modesty and soundness of mind, not with styles of hair braiding and gold or pearls or expensive garb, but in a way that befits women professing to reverence to God, namely, through good works"
So although tattoos are not specifically mentioned, we can find examples in the Bible that taken together, indicate tattoos to be not in accordance with Christian values.
As far as the so called "Christian rock bands", the original motive may have been a way of proclaiming Bible truths, but soon degenerated into standard practices of worldly rock performers, only the lryics changed to Godly referrences, which is somewhat immaterial given that you can't even hear the lryics in many of these 'songs'. So they go on immitating the 'Godless" bands in practically every aspect, yet they are hypocrites in proclaiming to be a "Christian' rock band. The two are actually mutually excusive. 2 Corinthians 6:14 states: For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness? So in the final analysis, it is a personal decision as to whether or not you think God would approve of such bodily mutilations. Another way would be to ask yourself, "would Jesus get tattoos? I think simple Bible based logic would dictate He would not.

Tattoos for the most part are considered in the same category as idolatry. The 10 commandments tells us not to have anyother gods before God. Not to make any graven image to worship, etc. Some christians see this as the same thing. However, I see nothing wrong with it personally. You must decide what is right for you. Idolaty could be seen as wearing a necklace with a cross or crucifix also. Your call...just make sure you go to a licensed and clean tatoo parlor.

Under the Law of Moses there was a law given to the Nation of Israel about marking the body. Leviticus 19:28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. If you are have believe the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins then you have the Holy Spirit living within you and you are the temple of God. We are instructed not to defile the temple of God. 1 Corinthians 3: 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 1 Corinthians 3: 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

I got two tattoos before I became a Christian. Im not really sure if I think tattoos are a sin. The simple act of getting one ....But I do know that God doesnt want us to be like the world. So with drinking, tattoos, peircings...I believe it's what leads you to do these things or what you do after you do these things. For example if you get drunk and sin. It wasnt the drinking that was a sin it was the act commited after being drunk.... i think?

I have lots of tattoos and feel that the scripture you are referring to says to treat your body as God's temple. I try but I do fall short of the glory of God many times without intention. I don't think we'll be turned away at heavens door because we have tats. It's a form of expressing yourself.

This is a sure saying in the bible, but does not relate specially to tatooing in general. I do not have time to look up the scripture but will tell you that the lord says do not put any mark upon your person which is your body because the lord thy god is holy.

Leviticus 19:28 - "You shall not make...any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD."
This was part of the law given to Israel in the Old Testament. Since no one could perfectly keep it, Jesus came to fulfill it for all who will believe. For believers, God's law has been placed within our hearts and it is not burdensome but a joy.
