Kudos to you for actually researching your religion and reading the bible.
I can't offer any advice as I am not Christian, but wanted to tell you I admire people that seek answers to questions even if it may go against the grain of the majority.

First of all, it really WAS written in that time period where woman were treated as property. Next, it depends on your sect of Christianity. Parts of the bible also say that homosexuals should be killed. That is not condoned by the Pope or by society, and is illegal. An important thing to remember is that the Bible was written as a series of stories, to get a point across. According to Americancatholic.org:
"The Bible is the unique and authentic self-revelation of God. Each book is inspired—no matter whether it was written by more than one person, whether it was written over the course of several centuries or whether we are certain who wrote it.
Inspiration does not mean that God simply dictated the text to the biblical writers or that, with 144 hours of videotape, you could have captured exactly what is described in the first creation account (Genesis 1:1—2:4a). Of course, there is a second creation account (starting with Genesis 2:4b)."
On the same site, when asked if the Bible is a story a Franciscan responds:
"Yes, it is a story, but a story full of meaning and truth. Both Jews and Christians accept this story as inspired by God.
If you had been present with a video camera at the creation of the world, would you have captured exactly what the Book of Genesis describes? Would you have recorded both creation stories (1:1—2:4a, as well as 2:4b-25)? Would you have recorded Noah, the ark and the flood exactly as the Book of Genesis describes them?
Hardly. These stories, however, convey powerful, fundamental, religious truths about human life. These stories are not videotape renditions of early happenings. Even a videotape is true from a limited physical perspective."

I am going to be bruttally honest here. Let me start by saying that i am not a christian. I am not desirous of being one. If what i say offends you after i apologize now.
The bible is a book that i use only for one reason. I use it because i love the psalms and i believe that they are very powerful. I also read proverbs every now and again.
The bible is the biggest book of contradictory literature in the world.
I ask the same question. Why are some things ok and why are some not.
I do not have very long hair like you, but my hair is not my crowning glory. Who i am is what makes me a queen. Who you are is what makes you a queen also. I was born out of wedlock to but my God has been so good to me that if he is any better, my life would be perfect.
The old testament was written in a time when womwen were thought to be beneath men. She was a nobody.
The new testament was written to control man's thoughts.
As to whether or not God intended for us to be hurt i cannot answer. Why should we be hurt by man for our sins when the same God said ask for forgiveness.
I would like to see what the first bible had in it. The bible was written and rewritten too many times for me to take anything it says to heart.
All the men that wrote bible i am sure at some point in time put in things to control their sect of people.
Instead, I make decisions and pray about it.
I ask God for guidance and he answers my prays.
I may not get what i want but i know that he will give me what he think is best for me. Therefore i have no need for the bible other than the reason i gave you.
The bible is filled with half truths and that shouldn't be if it is suppose to guide us in our every day living.

Mano of those passages MUST be understood inside that culture ands compared to what others at that time did.
For example women were never taught to read, write, or given ANY education. Paul was telling the new Christians that they should only allow those among themselves that were educated to speak. Notice women are allowed in church to learn and hear the gospel, in the Jewish synagogues, women were not allowed inside.
Women were the FIRST to see the Resurrected Jesus, and first to tell that Jesus was the Risen Lord. At a time that women were considered to be a possession that is some honor.
Priscilla is an honored teacher of the Bible Acts 18:24.
Where in the Bible are "non-virgins" supposed to be stoned to death? If it is the Old Testament that is no surprise because MEN and WOMEN are under the law and there is no forgiveness in the law.
Can you show me the passages about illegitimate births? I want to understand the context before offering an answer.

The Church at that time was very new and had many obstacles to over come. They were leaving behind everything they had been taught to do since Moses and now were free from the law.Not free to sin God forbid but to serve God in Love from the heart. When most of us gave our hearts over to Christ we were faced with changes , habits that were not so easy to break. They had the gentiles like me who would gobble down roast pork and Jews who were defiled if they smelled it.These two cultures were now brothers and sister in Christ. They were to become one in Christ and love one another. As Christians we are saved the very second that we are born again, but we are not totally sanctified. We are continually being sanctified growing in the grace and knowledge of are Lord Jesus Christ and He is a very Big God not to mention the Only.Following what the Bible says is good but following what the Bible says as the Spirit leads is a must.If we fail to do this we will end up just like the leaders of that time and fail to recognize our Messiah when He reveals Himself to us. You and your daughter stick right in there and remember if you fall get back up , Jesus is the answer to all our troubles

I am recently a born again Christian so all my answers arnt fool proof...But ive heard that what was written in the Old Testament doesnt apply to todays laws ...EX: We no longer have to sacrifice animals because Jesus died for our sins. So women being stoned to death obviously doesnt apply today. I believe that you are a Christian when you have accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. After you are truely a Christian sin should be a thing of your past ( All though even Christians make mistakes) You should follow Gods comandments and try your best to be in the likely ness of God. Good Luck to you

What version of the Bible are you reading? Could you give me references please? Because I don't think we're on the same page. I have NEVER read that in my Bible...all of it except the stoning part. The stoning was like our capital punishment. When people did something wrong that was condemnable for death, most of the time they got stoned. Once again, could you give me some references for this stuff? I would really like to help you, but I want to make sure I know exactly what you are talking about first.

Here are your options:
1. Ignore the contradictions and just mindlessly quote verses like many people do.
2. Dismiss God entirely, and go atheist.
3. Look for a religion that does not contradict itself (if you find one, let me know).
4. Have your own connection with your higher power, without needing an out-dated book to tell you what to do.
5. Become a leader in your church and try to implement changes that would make it more welcoming to women and less contradictory.
Congratulations. You've now entered the realm of critical thought. Try to pass it on if you can, it's a very rare quality.

Justice for all didn't answer the question. "It is what it is" doesn't explain anything. AND she wasn't asking because it "singled her out". She noticed some guidelines that people seem to follow from the bible, and other guidelines that people don't follow. So what are the rules for deciding which things are true and which aren't?
So what people are basically saying is that we've chosen which version of the bible to adhere to? What if we find a new different version of the bible - can we decide to follow that bible because we like it better?

Honey, anyone who reads that book either gets confused or doesn't read well. It's meant to challenge you, it's not an easy read. That's why there are so many sects and divisions and churches who can't agree. They all pick a theory and run with it. I say you keep reading, you discuss your questions with people who share your faith, and wait until you feel something speaks to you personally. The whole thing is filled with paradox, and I don't think you need to worry as much about the literature as you do your spirit.

Read Galatians. It was Pauls writings to the Galatians wherein he explains that the old testament required the Jews to live by certain laws. However, Jesus was sent to save all including those who are Gentiles. A Gentile does not follow Jewish laws, but are bound to God by faith. Gal 3:11-13. the rest of that chapter explains even further.
