6 volts Lead acid Battery content 3 cells of 2.2volts each connected in series all together open circuit voltage max 6.6volts only .If it connected with charging circuit it may be possible to show more voltage.If you try to connect a lamp load (6volts 2 - 3 watts)It will falls to 6 volts.otherwise try to change other meter to measure for confirmation. at fully charged condition Acid SG must be within 1.22.

Possibly when it is just removed from a charger. As a higher voltage is required to charge the battery. And the temperature of the fluid would still be boiling as it is changing to acid, it would confuse the specific gravity reading. They used to put a thermometer attached to the hydrometer.
