Yeah pretty much... Rent can be pretty high and forget about buying a home unless your a millionaire. You can't forget about gas for you car... it's about $2.63-$3.00 a gallon and the cost of living is the 2nd highest in the state and 3rd in the entire country and car insurance can't forget that. But hey London is a more expensive city be glad you don't live there.

Definitely! It was HORRIBLE when I was stationed there back many years ago (the cost of fuel for my vehicle rose more than 40 cents a gallon just by crossing over the state line into California), the cost of food to feed myself (single Parent on Active Duty and my two toddlers) doubled, my insurance costs tripled, my Housing Rental Cost was 1.5 times my mortgage in my previous duty station (for 1/3 the size of the residence), the Utilities were 1.5 times the cost of my previous duty station, child care fees more than doubled, etc.
Given all this -- it was a NO BRAINER of the vast relief I felt when I got orders OUT of California -- so that I could get anywhere that was more reasonable -- and I've experienced many duty stations.

Housing in Los Angeles is expensive, but I don't think it is as bad as San Francisco and Boston. LA has places like Burbank and Beverly Hills. You might be able to find a pretty decent deal in other areas if you look around.

Rubuttox hit the nail right on the head.
L.A. is moderately expensive. If you're coming from New York, Boston, or San Francisco, it probably won't be that bad. But it is far more expensive than places such as Houston, Chicago, and Seattle.

particular. very just about any the place you bypass it will be costly. yet whilst your used to creating lots of money and residing in a great homestead then you definately would desire to wanna evaluate shifting to Lake Havasu or some the place superb. Jut approximately any the place you bypass issues could have there own little way of being costly. some extra desirable than others. Sorry. yet l. a. is the least of your conflict for rate. So l. a. is excellent yet trashy.

Let's put it this way:
To be able to afford the median home, car, and lifestlyle in LA, it would take the single person having a job that pays $20/hr (based on a 40 hr. workweek)
The median income is less than $10/hr
Good Luck!

VERY!!! I just moved from L.A. I was only there 10 months, & that was enough for me! L.A. in general has a very high cost of living index. All my boyfriend & I could afford was a 500sqft. apt in the southernmost part of L.A. for $840/mo. I hope you don't want to live in a house though....there's hardly any for rent & you have to be very well off to buy one. Hope you like apartment living! With all the things there is to do in L.A., it's hard to afford any of them with high rent & high bills. But if you're into it, more power to ya.

YES! Not only is housing quite expensive but food, gas, insurance, etc. is too. I would move to California if I could afford it because its beautiful out there. But....I'm not rich so I'm staying put!

According to cost of living calculators, my 1800 sq ft, 20 yr old home here near Atlanta, GA, would be worth about $1.2 million in L.A. Cost here? $160,000.
I would not leave my job here to move to L.A. if someone offered to quadrupole my income!
