Why does everyone who believes in a religion try and spread it every chance they get? And why do they not give up after the first time?

look at it rationally:
Religion is a means of control
The more people you control the more power a religion has
The more power you have the better chance you have of world domination

If for one second any single religion stops attempting to gain in size and power another will come and take it's place. Some people see religion as a way to morals, but morals exist outside of religion, so to say that religion is spread to make people good people is sort of a fallacy since people can be good people without it. As for the argument that the bible says so, which bible, and how do you know yours is better the next religion? Because god said so? which god? how do you know yours is right? has he talked to you? if he has and you engaged in dialog, you may want to see a shrink cause you're probably a schizophrenic (or DID for all you shrinks).

Maybe because they honestly want to save your soul and believe that the only way to salvation is through their beliefs.

However, not all of us are interested in spreading our religion. Rarely, if ever, will you see a Wiccan standing on a street corner or pulpit, thumping her Book of Shadows. We believe that everyone must find their own path and that if Wicca is right for you, you will find your way to it.

Judaism, also, tends not to "recruit." You really have to work at it to become Jewish, it's not simply a matter of accepting the Jewish traditions. And I've never known any Jews who have come up to me and said, "Have you ever considered becoming Jewish?"

Buddhists do not openly recruit, though they do not turn away those who wish to study the teachings. Have you ever seen a group of Buddhists handing out literature regarding their philosophy? I sure haven't.

Shinto is another relgion that does not openly recruit new members. Hinduism is another. Amish people don't recruit.

So you see, there are many religions that do not actively seek new converts.

Oh come on people... If were going to answer at least try to make it worth the person's time to read. Christians and all religions sole purpose is to spread the word about God.. So that all may have teh chance to live eternally with him and glorify his name. Sometimes people are pushy with their religion and I know its a turn off... but as a Christian... I believe there is a time and place for witnessing and it isnt uncomfortable or invasive..

This isn't a real question. It's a rant. A rant deserves a rant, so here's mine - ALL (as in every single one with the exception of Buddhism) religions seek new followers because all claim to be the true one. This makes it a desperate struggle to gain followers before the perusia, apocalypse, end of time, whatever, happens. That is why we try to spread our religion. Why do atheists do it?

There is a theory that religion is a meme, a sort of informational virus (not necessarily a pathological virus). Lots of memes are very beneficial.

The theory of memes is that like genes they will do anything to increase their numbers. While genes inhabit the physical world, memes inhabit people's minds. Successful memes must out compete other memes for processing and replication time in the human brain.

Like genes, memes mutate. Religions mutate into factions and completely new species of religion, eg. Judaism to Christianity (I'm NOT trying to imply that Christianity is more advanced, evolution doesn't work towards particular goals in memes, any more than it foes with genes). Religion has been a very successful meme.

I think that the main reason is the desperation to be heard by others and to show that their truth is the ONE AND ONLY truth.

Nevertheless in most religions (christianism in all their forms - catholicism, protestantism, etc- islamism, budism) some people are really convinced that spreading the "Word" is their mission for life.

They are trying to help society get some morals and save the society from the decline of human destruction. The breakdown happens in the family and if they do not have a guide(religion) then they will never learn what is right and wrong. Ex: Fight Clubs. Would you consider this right or wrong? It's retarded, that's what it is. Retard--To slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment. If you don't teach right from wrong then you are retarding your kids. Don't confuse this with the handicap of mentally retarded. This is not the same thing so please understand I am not making fun of mentally retarded folks.

While I'm sure there are people out there with less than pure motives...I think most just found something that makes them happy, and they want to give others the chance to share in that joy.

Why they don't give up after the first time? Because people aren't stagnant robots, they change.

Because men are desperately suffering in the darkness of unbelief and distrust. The believers will never give up until when their brothers and sisters return to the warm embrace of the One True God.

I know plenty of religious people who don't try to proselyte every chance they get. In fact, I have had very few people ever discuss religion with me.

I think you may not be looking at it very objectively?
