The very simplest way to get rid of onion or garlic smell on your hands is to rub them with stainless steel. I use the faucet in my kitchen. Wet hands, rub them along the faucet, works every time. I learned this from the chef Justin Wilson. (RIP)

Cut a lemon in half, squeeze juice and rub into your hands. If you have any open scratches or wounds, this will hurt like crazy. You can add lemon juice or lemon oil (sometimes used for furniture polish) to any hand lotion and rub that in as well.
Also, a nail brush is a great way to really clean those things at the tips of the fingers.
By the way, what did you cook?

Cold water and a stainless steel spoon.
Whatever you do don't use Hot water first. It will make the smell stay.
The stainless steel spoon with the onion juices cause a chemical reaction, that kills the smell.

Lemon juice. Your hands may smell like lemons, but lemon smells better than onion. Plus the lemon smell doesn't last as long.... :)

I have found that this works the best. After chopping onions and/or garlic, first wash your hands in COLD WATER, you want keep the pores closed and wash off the oils, then wash with hot water.

I think there is a chemical reaction when you rub your skin with stainless steel. It gets the smell out, so try wetting a spoon and rubbing it all over your hands. It's supposed to really work!!

Rub your hands with a fresh lemon meticulously, going between fingers and under nails.
