If you have your own copy of Windows, you can insert the CD in your CD-Rom drive and reboot your PC. Follow the instructions and when it will ask you to reinstall Windows, it will tell you that a version already exists. You can overwrite the installation, and this should keep your files and programs (however, I highly recomment a backup before you do this!).

Don't format, just reinstall. If it asks you to format your drive, you've not selected the right option. Go back and select another one.

Then, durint the installation, it will prompt you for your Windows key. Enter your own key and proceed with the installation.

Once completed, go on Windows Update to get the latest patches.

Good luck!

tell it you want a complete install, be sure you have backups of any data.

you are wise to buy your own copy... in 30 days, most "not paid for" copies stop working.
