Running XP, had a massive crash, may be virus related, but it got though Norton, and two spyware/malware checkers etc.

Only thing was to repair XP, would not work, neither would Recovery Console. So decided to buy new Hard Drive, for a clean install.

How do I get all My Documents off the old slave, as my backup is a week old, and there is some stuff missing. The old My Documents will be locked.

Any info would be appretiated.

Regards

Frankie

Believe the probelm with "just" opening the old "my Documents" is that XP puts permissions on folders etc, and it is how to get round them, only need to copy about 10 files, as all rest are on last weeks back-up

Solved It
Ensure you have admin rights
Reboot into Safe Mode (with Admin Rights)
Go to the folder
Load securities
Change Ownership to Admin
Job Done

I assume that as you bought a new hard drive you probably have some expertise and installed it yourself?

If the old hard drive that was virused has been installed as a slave, presumably you can access the files on that through Windows Explorer? Try to copy the 'My Documents' folder from the old HD to the new HD. Of course if your old HD was so badly virused that you can't now access 'My Documents' you may have to send the old HD to a specialist data recovery firm which can be expensive. Pity you didn't have a back-up!

Sytem restore won't work as your original HD is virused!
