I really doubt it's the litter.

Will this smell fade a bit when I move into a bigger space (house)?

Cats usually don't smell unless they are sick with some kind of skin decease or something. If it stinks than it is from litter box. Clean it more often. Twice a day and then you wont have any smell. My family has 11 cats and no smell.
In the pet stores, they sell special cleaning supplies, that are specially made to get rid of cats urine smell.

You just need to clean more often. Scoop out the liter at least once a day, twice is preferable. Vacuum/ sweep once a week. Vacuum the couch once a week. Use the arm and hammer baking soda for vacuum, the pet ones. The last thing to do to keep your apartment from smelling like cat is to bathe the kitty about 2 to 4 times a month. They don't like it much, but it helps reduce hairballs for them, reduces shedding, and smell.

Have your cat spayed or neutered so it won't spray. Keep the litter box very clean. Clean it out every day. I found that using an air filter system helped tremendously, especially if I kept it in the same area as the litter box. The smell will go anywhere you go if you don't keep the box and cat clean.

I use a spray that I found in the pet isle. It can take out stains, plus it has enzyemes that breaks down the urine. It works wonders. We also store baking soda boxes through out the house.
