Ubuntu is utter crap so don't let people make you believe it's anything else. If it were an "easy" alternative it wouldn't take 3 days to install a wireless USB adapter, and 6 hours to get it to play a freaking DVD. It has poor hardware compatibility and even has trouble recognizing the keyboard on startup.
Other distros of Linux might be better, but you'll eventually realize your spending too much time trying to get them to run half as well as Windows.
Honestly, the only other alternative is Mac. I just wish they would allow their OS to run on a regular PC.

What linux distrobution did you use. I have a dualboot system consisting of ubuntu linux (best distro ever) and windows xp ( best micsosoft os ever) and they work very well togeather.
The problem I had with switching over to linux was I kept feeling like "why use linux when windows can do everything you want it to" If you think of windows as a last resort to linux, its alot esier to use linux predominantly.
That being said. Linux does take a few days of screwing around with before you can really get into it and even once you have gotten used to it, you will still be learning new things about it. But in my opinion its the best OS out there.

You could try a Mac, but I wouldn't recommend it. Stick with Windows. It's the best. If you want to try linux again I would recommend the new Ubuntu Linux. It has a very easy setup and installers. It also comes with a great bundle of software. Best of all It is FREE!

http://www.ubuntu.org is the closest feeling to windows that the linux community has available. You can download it free, and request a copy on CD.

Go for BeOS. It's free.
Or even Linux. It's getting even easier nowadays, where noteworthy ones are SuSE and Mandrake
