I would, not only for the support but to believe that my life will have meaning even if I dont understand what it is. If God is as I believe Him to be, then everything we do fits into His plan, somehow.

Dude, get over your parental separation anxiety. Leave behind childhood and be a man. The meaning of life is what you decide you want it to be. Give yourself hope by going out and making the world a better place. No god is going to do it for you. You have all the power you need at this moment to go out and solve someone's problem that they don't know how or aren't able to solve. You can be a father to the fatherless. I am. You can visit those in prison. I do. You can be a blessing to the elderly, a mentor to a struggling student, a coach for kids who have none. There are so many things you and I can do for others that are waiting on a god that isn't coming to their aid. People are hoping for solutions where the only solution is other people who are willing.
Children need daddy watching over them. Men need to be delivering other people from their distress. You want to find meaning. Brother there's buckets of meaning in lifting others up.

It's very interesting that you put the reason for 'faith' so bluntly. There is no inherent meaning to life - you're right.
It is incumbent upon every person to create that meaning for their life. That's what adults do. Children keep wishing for a daddy to take care of it all.
If you actually read the bible, anyway, what kind of meaning can it give you? It's one hell of a wierd book - you can get tips on slaveholding, on selling your daughter for sex, incorrect information on astronomy and mathematics, that horrific story in genesis 34 (read it now if you haven't), the horrific Amos murdering his daughter so god will give him victory in battle (just like, by the way, Agememmnon in the Illiad), the massacre at Ai, the mention in Genesis that sons of giants married daughters of men!, a god who saves the world by slaughtering his son.... UGH UGH UGH Also, read the Biblical Archeological Society's work on the bible - most of the stories are from egptian myth, just doctored up a little.
I think you have to be a weak-minded child to want to believe someone is watching over you and helping take care of you.
I would NOT want to pretend a fairy tale is real. I want to understand reality. This God takes lousy care of people, in case you can't remember, oh let's say Katrina or the Tsunami, so I wouldn't want him on my side anyway.

I can help myself, I can take care of myself. I don't need someone to watch over everything I do. If "even if God wasn't real" and I believed in him, I would be deluding myself and living in a fantasy world. It would be much the same as saying, I want to walk around and dress up in a suit of armor all day long because I think the medieval times were happier than the current times.

Unfortunately, that is an assumption that Christians make: that there would be no meaning in life without God.
I think you can come up with all kinds of things in your life that are meaningful that have nothing to do with God.
To believe in something because it makes you feel good is generally the true underlying reason for believing in God. However, not everyone needs to fall back on this crutch. They can look within to feel good. They can find meaning in many other places. Hope is not exclusive to a belief in God. For some, believing in oneself is more than enough. And for some, the truth is more important than feeling good.

Well, you ask a good question. I have two answers. 1) I am not an atheist to defy religion. I am an atheist because I am honest. I can't lie about believing when I don't. 2) Being an atheist helps me make the most of this mortal coil. I am not living in a dress rehearsal waiting for a new life when I die. This is it. I have to make the most of it.

I believe in God but not religion since I think that religion is man made and mostly brings problems. I really don't care if my God is real or not, it's my belief and I don't force it on others. It's for my own comfort, not to prove something to someone else.

Whatever meaning I bring to it. Doing right by my fellow human being, developing knowledge for its own sake, pursuing those things that bring me joy or peace.
If you need to believe in a deity to bring your life meaning, you've missed the whole point of 'meaning'. YOUR life should have YOUR meaning, not your parents', not your friends', not your deity's.
And I wouldn't want to believe in something that I have no proof or even evidence that exists.

If God wasn't real, then what's the point in believing a lie or a fantasy?

So... you think that 'belief' is a matter of choice? You think that self-delusion is a virtue? You advocate deceiving yourself in order to create meaning in life?
Your question does little more than testify to the shallowness of your own intellect and spirit. It is very sad and pathetic... and it is even sadder, and more pathetic, to realize that over half the population of the USA share that same shallowness of intellect and spirit, and would agree with you.
