A mate told me that I had tons of probs with his PC when he was using a copies of windows he got from the net. After he bought the real thing his PC has been running smoothly. Does that make sense to anyone. My head says that if it's a pure copy or iso image of the original, then it should work the same???

NO, it's not true, all windows (and genuine ones) have problems, it depends of the configuration of your sistem and installed applications, and any malware programs as well

Microsoft has so many updates, patches and fixes that a pirated copy can't keep up. They designed a checker to see if the software has a good key, and if it doesn't, you can't get updates.

Also, some of those copies are just full of viruses and spy ware

Nope, makes no sense to me other than the Microsoft Genuine Advantage may be stopping the updates. You can buy the fix on eBay, or get a genuine copy.
