Need more info - how old are these puppies? How is the mom acting? Lots of moms spend much less time with their puppies once they get their teeth (those sharp teeth hurt) and only feed them when they have to. I started supplementing all my litters at about 4 weeks of age to help out the mom. Start by feeding them dry puppy chow moistened with warm water twice a day. Mix it up, put it in a saucer or very shallow bowl and set it down for the puppies. They'll walk in it an make a mess and you'll have to guide their heads down to it at first, but they'll eat. Discard any leftovers.

Don't worry about the mother being ready, weaning puppy's has nothing to do with the mother (other than seeing that she does not develop mastitis.
It is all about when is the puppy ready to be on it's own. There can be some variation from breed to breed, but the norm is to start the process at 28 days (4 weeks) and let the puppy's be with their mother at night only, feeding them three times during the day (I mix dry puppy food and warm water in a blender). Then at 35 days (5 weeks) the puppies should be separated from their mother all together, but the litter should be kept together for an additional 14 days (2 weeks) at a minimum. This allows the puppy's to socialize with puppy's which is very important to their development.

Do the pups eat puppy food yet? Once your pups can eat on their own then the mom can wean. Most mother dogs do this on their own with no help needed by owners.

She will want to be away from them more and will start to whine and yelp when they try to feed (their little teeth start to hurt her). My doghad pups about 4 weeks ago and she is starting to wean them now. I have been giving them puppy chow with warm water twice a day and they have not been hounding her to nurse. Hope this helps...good luck!

The mother will be ready to ween when she is drying up in milk supply...you can tell this by the condition of her nipples. Also, she is ready to ween when the pups are roughly 3-4 weeks old... and if their eating solid food.

Usually she won't let them nurse or at least not for long, then she may start snapping at them, if they can drink water and eat puppy food and they are at least 6 weeks to 8 weeks old.

Why are you even concerned.. do you want to do it for her?? She will do it when the time is right.. between 7-8 weeks she will start.. she will feed them less frequently.. if your puppies are around this age, you can start introducing them to wet food and kibble..

when she starts pullling away from the puppies when they are trying to snuck on her. Also when the puppies are 6 weeks of age, they are ready.
