Absolutely. Your prior military experience will give you "preferential status" in most jobs, especially city/state/federal. I've been in the Army for 19 years and I can tell you that it is definitely worth it. Not only the training, the money for college, but the experience of being a Soldier.

Yes, it would help you greatly later on if you are a fireman in the Army. The think is the fireman MOS is a very hard one to get cause their number are few; yet that is what makes the Army's enlistment the best: if you chose that job (fireman MOS) and it is available, you get to keep that job as long as you pass the school. Another route you can try is enlisting in something else if is not available then, and on your intial re-enlistment, you can try to change your MOS to fireman, because it is easier then. But, just keep in mind that it is a hard MOS to get. As for the benefits: free health and dental, money for housing, free eduation while active duty, travel, GI bill, a guaranteed paycheck, and you get tons of discounts (free admission of Anheisuer-Busch themeparks). When you do get out, you will always get preferential employment status because of your service. Just something to think about. Good Luck!

Not really. If you really want a job with a city fire department, go to paramedic school. I've been a medic for 16 years now and can tell you from first hand experience that most departments want people that are cross trained as EMS personel. The kicker is that your payscale is upgraded greatly that way also. The first thing to do is decide what you really want to do. Do you want to be in the military or do you want to be a firefighter? Talk to the firefighters in your city. Talk to the chief. Talk to people you know who are in the military. Talk to people you know who have been in the military. You'll find that recuriter's don't always tell you everything. I'm not saying that they aren't telling the truth, but some things don't turn out just like they say they will. My brother joined the guard last year with the MOS of turbine engine mechanic. Before he could even go to the school, his unit was reclassified and they were all sent to MP school. You don't always get what you think you will. You get what the military needs. Check the paperwork. If you're concerned about money for school, I'll bet you qualify for financial aid. Check with your local college financial aid office. Think about this too. Most fire departments work either 24 hours on and 48 hours off or 24 on and 72 off. Benefits are usually good too. Retirement with hazardous duty time served.

I am joining the Army as we speak. Waiting on a few things to clear before I can board the bus to go to basic. And who ever said there isn't fighter fighters as a MOS in the Army doesn't know what there talking about. There are many benefits to joining the Army. But the best thing for you to do is first you can go to the army web site.. www.goarmy.com. You can look up all the jobs there. See what benefits u can recive and so on. And if you like what u see you can type in ur zip code on there web site and it'll give you the # to ur local recrutier's station call them up they'll point u in the right direction. Good luck...

I'm to lazy to read all these responses but most of these people are clueless. The Army only offers firefighting in the reserve componnents. The active duty side of it has been taken over by civilian contractors. The Navy, and Airforce do offer an active duty firefighter jobs. Trust me i was in the Army and take it from me the Airforce is defenately worth checking in to. But you could go Army reserve get the training, college money , not have to put up with the Army's crap on a full time basis, and work for your local FD all at the same time.

It varies from state to state; but many states (and cities) give "veterans bonus" points to applicants. Also, a military background teaches discipline and work ethic which is highly prized in all fields. Plus, don't forget, as a member of the military you get education benefits, health care, and a chance to see the world.

I don't believe that there are any fireman's MOS in the army. All the fire situations on base are handled I believe by civilian poersonnel. If I were you, I would just try out for the fire department.

the only Branch that trains firefighters similar to the civilian community is the Air Force. All other branches use civilians on their bases. There is a very small number of Army Firefighters, but they are not trained like civilians, so it wouldn't help you at all. Besides, soon enough even that MOS will be gone.

there are firefighters in the Army so that could probably help you along. Basically even just any specialty in the service since the Army requires great physical fitness and support of your comrades, the fire dept would see those as positive attributes as well.

good luck to you
