There is a program here on Yahoo to read the Bible in a year that may be helpful. http://todaysbible.lifewithchrist.org/

Also, do you have a contemporary version for this first overview reading. It would help you a lot for a good understanding.

There are many English translations at the Biblegateway.com that you can look at for clarity.

You should start with the book of Acts. To see the excitement and what the begining Christians were doing with their new found faith. This will you appreciate the next section you read: The Gospels (Matt, Mark, Luke and John) about the life of Christ, Himself. After that you can go into the Old Testament to see how Christ completed all the prophecies and promises in there.

You can start from the begining but reading it straight throught out can be hard and you might lose the context and interest by Leviticus and the begats. Most of all, pray before you read. God bless ^_^

A lot of Bible reading plans alternate daily readings between the Old Testament and the New. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting bogged down in the geneologies or laws, without understanding the spiritual connection. I would recommend reading through the Gospel of John first, then progressing through both testaments, with both 2 chapters in the Old to 1 chapter in the New. You should finish both testaments in about the same time, and be blessed through the reading.

Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are two of my personal favorites. The books of Job And Psalms are also quite good. My favorite Gospel is John. The book of Revelation is the most mysterious book in the whole Bible and is full of weird images. I have never read the Quran, but I have read "Oahspe, the New Bible", given to the world in 1882. I have read some of the Urantia Book too.

I would read some texts on ancient peoples of other cultures before you start with the bible to see where the viewpoint of life was back then. We are reading it adapted to today's terminology and it makes it very difficult to take word for word.

Try some books on shamanism medicine men and you will have a better idea of what these people were about.

Start in Matthew because every chapter is the words of eternal life and read all the way through to revelation, and also read the old testament which is also known as the Torah.

starting at the beginning is a very good place to start and work through. remember you must learn to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. take everything slowly and surely. when I hired and trained new people I told them " slow and steady will get the job done quicker, easier and more accurately than hurrying up. by hurrying up more mistakes would be made and the job would have to be redone costing more time, energy and money than doing the job correctly in the first place. speed would come with experience after getting used to the job. "

Psalms and proverbs are perfect for what you need, are easy and full of teachings and don't have a continuations one to another. But what bless me all time so much was the the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But all the Bible is great.

I have always thought the book of John, the gospel of John, I mean, [ot John I and II].,was the very best start for a beginning Bible reader.
