What are the different types of oils I should use? I have some thick, rotary oil and I'm going to get light, trumpet valve oil (thinking Al Cass Fast) but I'm not sure where to put it. The thick oil makes my keys sluggish - should I forget about that? I think I'm supposed to put that under the valve caps, and the thin oil into the pipes. Hmmm

Rotary oil should NOT be thick; it is a very light thin oil. Do not use oil on the slides; use slide grease. Both of these items should be available at your local music store. You could use trumpet valve oil on a temporary basis if the proper oil needs to be ordered.

Apply a very small amount of grease to each slide as often as necessary to keep them moving freely, but not slipping from position. You should not have to grease the slides more than a few times a year. Use a drop or two of oil every other day on the rotors under the valve caps and also apply a drop or two to the underside in the small space beneath the stop arm hub and the bearing. (This space is where you can see the difference between the moving and non-moving parts when you press the key. If the valves are still sluggish after using the proper oil for several days, you can use drops of kerosene in place of oil for one or more applications until the valves move freely. If the problem persists or there are signs of corrosion, your horn will need some professional maintenance.
