Natural instinct to start a brood. All chickens lay eggs in a series - never more than one or two per day. If the eggs are not collected, and a sufficient number of eggs are allowed to remain in the nest, the hen may stop laying eggs and start brooding. When the hen leaves the nest after laying an egg, it cools which suspends the development of the embryo inside. If the ambient temperature remains between 45F and 65F, the embryos will remain viable for as long as two weeks. When the hen becomes broody and sits on her eggs for three weeks, all of the eggs will hatch at about the same time. http://www.i4at.org/lib2/chickens.htm

Chickens don't need a rooster to lay eggs.. They just keep laying eggs in about once in a little more than a day. If there's a rooster around, then it mates and the eggs would be fertilized..

If there are no roosters around, then the eggs are unfertilized..

The eggs we get are mostly unfertilized because the egg laying hens are always kept away from the roosters, unless they want more chicken and the egg needs to be fertilized.

It takes two to tango, and it takes a rooster to fertilize a hen. Commercial egg producers cram hens three to a cage; they're not about to stick roosters in with 30,000 hens in an egg house. Folks who keep a few hens may also keep a rooster, but fertile eggs are no more nutritious than unfertile ones.

Edit: I don't know what Jess means by "a natural life," but hens certainly do lay in winter. Egg production drops, though, becauase hens need light to keep laying, and winter days are short. Commercial facilities keep lights on 24/7 and get 3 eggs in 2 days.

At chicken farms there are no roosters, so the hens lay unfertilized eggs. If you're asking HOW they can lay unfertilized eggs...I don't know. Probably the same way women do. We ovulate unfertilized eggs every mont, don't we? They come out whether we want them to or not.

for the same reason humans have ovolation every month. One egg is made and it still comes out even though it isnt fertiliesd.

Hens dont lay eggs in the winter if they live a natural live. They start in the spring and lay egg for 6-8 months and then stop. No point have chickens that freeze to death.

Just as in humans, women ovulate each month and eject an unfertilzed egg. Hens do the same when there isn't a rooster around.

All birds lay eggs...fertilized or not. Why? Because thats the way it is.

the hens (females) are separated from the roosters (males). the male and female must mate to produce a chick. no mating, no chicks.

good day.
