There will be Christmas shops in Grand Central Station, Bryant Park and Union Square. However, there are not a lot of places with Santa. You can call the Toys R Us in Times Square as well as FAO Schwartz. They will probably have a Santa. Also, you could take them to Rockefeller Center - they have a huge Christmas tree there every year.

Santa is at Macy's.

There is a giant tree in Rockefeller Center, and you can watch the skaters.

All the major stores have Christmas windows.

There is a giant snowflake on 5th Ave.

I seriously cannot believe you are looking for something outside of NYC at Christmas. You can't do Christmas any better than NYC does it.

Another idea is the Annual Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. It's a short train ride on MetroNorth Harlem Line from Grand Central. Link has pictures, they have this show every year.

Saks Fifth Avenue, the store on Fifth Avenue, used to have a big window display for the kids that was worth going to see. I don't know if they still do this display. The stores is in the 50s somewhere, like Fifth Avenue & 53rd St, or so.
