In a way. Religions tend to play on people's emotions to convert people, either as indoctrination as a child or through peer pressure as an adult. Then it manipulates people's emotions and biases to strengthen emotional bonds within the church and portray everybody outside the church as evil. This is very effective because humans have been emotional animals far longer than reasoning ones.
However, there will always be a reasoning subset of people who don't buy into the emotional manipulation and downright lies.
