Well, i know what you mean ... it is a difficult one to say ...
If she meant mate as in the original definition, yes ...
If in the new modern way, like the aussies use it, it means friend. This doesn't just mean she wants to be only friends (unless she said "only mates"), but you wont really know.

I get a feeling if a women says this nowadays it means the latter...

I know this doesn't really help :/

when a women says she wants to be your mate, it usually means she wants to be your mate, If you like her, be her friend get to know her personality and if you still like her, ask her out. i'm sure that by this way it will all go great for you. Good luck!

no it dosen't and if you think it dose then you will never know or understand how women work. i have loads of mates that are men and i am married with children and would never think of any of them in that way
