I really like this artist. But sometimes it is difficult to understand him because he goes in to many directions. I haven't read any good interview of him. Just one by Robert Storr.

his book 'The Daily Practice of Painting - Writings and Interviews 1962-1993' will give you a great insight into his thinking about his work in general and also goes into detail about specific pieces/series, its also essential reading for any painter/artist.

That's one thing that I liked about Gerhardt Richter, that he does go in so many directions, that he explores. To me, that is the coherent thing about his work.

You could think about it in this way also - he's an explorer of sorts, who challenges the viewer to consider the images themselves that he creates and what they know about them. He made me want to think about stuff more.
