In England mate is a term that originally just meant "A man's male friend" but today girls use it for their female friends and even friends of the opposite sex use it. People using it to refer to friends of the opposite sex is a recent development for the word mate because it used to be same sex only. I still wouldn't call a girl a mate, only my male friends.

She means friend - but I would say a 'fun friend'. I only refer to people as mates if they are a good friend and someone I have a laugh with. I suggest it means she is not romantically interested however.

It depends what country you are in I guess but in Uk, 'Mate' is a more informal, slang term for a friend or acquaintance! Language is evolving very quickly and words meanings can alter very quickly but I reckon most people use mate to refer to a good friend who they can be relaxed and informal with!
Using mate to describe your partner is a bit graphic for my liking :-)

A friend is someone you can count on in your time of sorrow and or share a deep secret or two with. A mate is someone you can spend more "personal effection" with. Like maybe love, or someone you can see yourself in a relationship with.

Love is the answer to everything. All you ever need is love,
communication and understanding. That's what I figured out so
far. If you are down, you need to get up and start doing something with
your life. Don't need to be shy, be straight forward and allways say what
you want and expect from the others.

It depends on her nationality... It is common for an Aussie to refer to her male friends as a mate, or a bloke.

convinced mate is in direction of a similar sex yet mate is a delightful way of affirming whats up buddy so that you'll easily say whats up mate instead of whats up my buddy. mate=casual time period for a buddy of a similar sex
