It's a con. What do you think?

Sorry mate it is actually £20m and yes it is a take on but not in the conventional sense.

It is somewhat down to luck.

ITV Play allows viewers to phone in. They are either told that they were unsuccessful, or they are placed on hold.

Either way the caller is charged. If successful they wait on hold for the chance to be put through to the studio and be live on air. However who gets through is randomized by a computer and is entirely up to chance [no guarantee]

You can actually win money through these shows so it not a complete take on but in a way it no more a take on than a raffle.

Note: these shows generate a LOT of revenue and it is because of this they can afford to give away money. If you were making:
£20,000,000 then £40,000 prize money doesn't seem like much!

Me thinks you've misheard
£8m maybe!

There has apparently been news about them admitting to fixing when they take calls and to only let calls through when a monitor says the call rate is low - and to put people on hold 30-40 minutes before taking a call. These quiz channels really are a scandal and it's about time OFCOM shut them all down.

Altho I am not quite sure what you are on about, I think its a shame people get ripped off calling these competition lines. Just don't do it. Also keep in mind, these competitions sometimes are fixed or they appear to be fixed. How many times, have you said Oh what ! How did that win? Sorry for being so cynical, but they are calculating business people, not happy clappy nice people.
