There are childish people who just like to try to get a reaction out of people, so they say things as vile as they can think of.
However, many Christians object just as strongly to the posts that simply point out that "god" doesn't exist. If that's what you mean by "vile and disgusting", then the problem is in the Christians, not in the people "putting down" Christianity.
Then further along the spectrum, there are Christians who themselves say vile and disgusting things, such as the creationists, the Terri Schaivo nuts, the "this is a Christian nation" traitors, the Islam-baiters, the anti-homosexual people and the anti-abortionists. Oh, and I see that here you have "everyone who doesn't believe what I do is going to hell" morons and the "if you don't believe what I do, you're serving Satan" freaks. All of those people of course _should_ be put down.
Then finally there's the Christians' equivalent of the very first group: Christians saying vile and disgusting things solely for the purpose of getting a rise out of people.

I try to not be rude or say things to hurt anyone, but ... I do have issues with Christianity and I do question the things I wonder about. The worst thing is that very few Christians can give clear proof of what they are talking about. I do listen when someone does give well thought out answers that is anchored in reality.
I think it's wrong to be mean just to be mean, but we all have the right to doubt and seek answers. (Real answers not just because I/the bible said so answers.)

Awww! never mind it's a harsh old world isn't it...Christianity is incredibly powerful so stop pretending to be victimised.
Maybe you should be more aware when you talk about other peoples world views and beliefs....sometimes religion deserves to be ridiculed.
Christians and Christianity itself can be quite disrespectful toward other people who are not Christians too...gratuitous rudeness is never called for.
Sometimes it's necessary to ridicule a religion when it is frankly doing something that is not right, like hindering the equal treatment of gay citizens, or hindering distribution of Condoms in Africa when there is an aids epidemic....think this through a bit.

I'm starting to feel like the non-believers here are all being tarred with the same brush. I have posted several opinions in this category, and I have not, as far as I can tell, been abusive to anyone, their god or their religion. It is starting to get a little annoying that there are people on here, including myself, who are getting abuse from others when all we are 'guilty' of is not having the same beliefs as others. There are, belive it or not, atheists who do not want to be hurtful and trash other peoples feelings, and yet I feel I'm being pushed into a group with those that do. And that to me is just as hurtful as anything anyone has said to you about your religios beliefs.

I think if you love God its suppose to hurt when you hear someone speak so vile about Him. In fairness I also think some believers are just as hateful in their remarks. We are not allow to play by unbelivers rules. We are bound to a higher standard and are accountable for our remarks. but its hard not to react sometimes.
before I was a believer I was always attacking and provoking. I have to often remind myself of that when I become discouraged with bad behavior

I do it because I think that Christian fundementalists and the American Christian right are more dangerous that any communist country or any other religion known to man.
Their self rightous idiocy and the inability they have to allow anyone to believe anything other than what they believe is frightening in the extreme.
These people give normal christians a bad name, and they will be the cause of many problems in the future.

Because people on both sides of the fence get snarky at each other. Your god is not the only one being put down.
