I bet many people have experienced this before. I myself gets "zapped" by just rubbing against people or even against metal. It occurs very often to me. Why? It hurts a lot... and how do we prevent it from happening?

That's either due to your clothes or your shoes. You can try treating your clothes with dryer sheets or anti static spray. Use it on everything you wear since you don't know what is responsible. Probably some synthetic material.
If it's the shoes then you could try treating the bottom of the soles the same way as your clothing or buy new shoes.

The "zapping" is caused by static electricity carried on your body. In order to stop the flow of static electricity you have to "ground" yourself before touching another person. Some people carry metal keys in their hand and wear rubber soled shoes to help ground the static electricity so they won't get zapped.
