you should get COOL EDIT PRO. I'm not sure if its free, but thats what we used at school (Specs Howard, School of TV and RADIO Broadcast Arts). It's really cool, and allows you to do ALOT with whatever it is you're working on.

Sony Sound Forge is the best i know and it's easy to use. it's not free but it's available for a long free trial period.
