Im a gymnastics coach and basically its all about agility and power, We do have fat kids come through but the weight genrally falls off as they train so you don't end up with fat kids competing.

This isn't meant to be cruel but fat hinders movement, its harder to bend over a large belly!

If by big you mean tall or broad and not fat, British and American gymnasts are often very broad shouldered and have large powerful legs (find a piccie of Brit Beth Tweedle and you'll see my point) I still compete as a gymnast and Im 5ft 7" which is tall for a gymnast and whilst it makes your vaults better and dance moves on floor more elaborate ( I have long legs!) it really hinders on the A bars - you have no idea how much clipping the bar with your toes hurts!!

It also makes you nearly 10ft of the floor on beam - scary!

I don't think they are not allowed to I just think smaller people are better at it which is why it is only them you see competing.

Picture the scene - big fat momma taking a run up to the vault - it's gonna end in tears (and disaster) isn't it........?

Would be hilarious though. Fat people's gymnastics. You've just given me a great idea..............!

I'm sure they can. Haven't you seen the advert for the Skoda Octavia 4x4? I'm sure it's a guy in a fat suit, but he can still do all the moves.

I don't see any reason why they can't. If they can compete with their fitter, nimbler, more athletic counterparts then good on them.

Its all to do with physics, the smaller you are the higher your power to weight ratio.

the bars are made for light people and you can run faster for vault or floor if you are skinny
