Will not budge from 4th gear. Tried shutting the car off and shifting out of 4th, the gear shift will not move. This has me extremely bewildered. Any body please help

This may appear that I am making fun of you but FIRST. Do you have clutch all the way to floor? If yes and you know nothing about transmissions/clutches then either buy books on how to prepare or take to shop. LOL dont try drive it. If close to shop and have friends then put in clutch and have friends push you there :).

Tricky.....maybe try to roll the car forward and back a few times while trying to pull it out of gear to get it into neutral. Sounds like it got bound up on the reverse transfer gear. Don't try to drive it until you get this thing popped into neutral. Check your linkage underneath. It may have a bent bracket or a keeper pin missing. Good luck.

If your clutch is bad you should be able to still shift the car if the engine is off . if not then I would think something like what Jeff saidyou have wedged it between gears.
