IS THE 5TH NUMBER IN YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ODD OR EVEN?

Supposedly, if you are a minority, the 5th digit in your SSN is even and odd if you are white! It has been said if you take a poll, most minorities will have an even 5th digit.

This is another urban legend.

"The second set of numbers...which includes the infamous 'race' digit) shows when the SSN was issued, not to whom.... Different states go through this two-digit code at different rates"

Tavis Smiley did not say this was true. He is a liberal commentator on public radio who is black, so some people may want to discredit him.

I agree with Birdsnake below -- this is one of the better conspiracy theories -- it got us all to check our SSNs!

The chances of the 5th number in a social security card being even, or odd is ALWAYS 50/50. Poll size has a lot to do with the results you've mentioned.

This is one of those strange coincidences that happens from time to time. My understanding is that American social security numbers are allocated over time to geographic areas in blocks, and youir number is a strong indication of where you come from. It just happens that some areas have very high concentrations of white or non-white populations, and also happen to have been issued a block of SS numbers where the fifth digit is odd or even, etc. So it looks like it is a way of colour-coding the population, but is it not.

And if you bellieve that ....

Not true at all.

The first three numbers refer to the region of the country you were born in. Low numbers start in the East and raising as you go West across the country.

The middle two numbers are closely related to the year you were born in. They may not be exact but they will be very close.

The final 4 numbers are completely random.
