last time the problem is with me
and my friend suggested that probably the cd rom lens become weaker because of old age or probably their was a dust on your cd lens so buy the cd cleaner or change it.
now you can get dvd combo worth Rs 1250/-

The Lense of your cd-rom is infected because of few reasons.
1. If you have purchased it 2nd hand then its Lense would be week now.
2. If its your own and working for a long then you would have played some cds which were scrached cds.
3. Sometime Dust goes into the cd rom and affect the lense.
If these things are not then your Operating System would have some problem with the RAM. but i think Your CD Rom Lense is affected because you say that sometime it works but sometime not.
Solutions is to Clean CD-Rom with any cleaner but its my Practical Experience that whenever CD-Roms are infected they don´t work long,whatever cleaners we use,once it is infected,very rare chances are there to be cleaned and work well.
You will have to change CD-Rom then.

its time for u to upgrade ur pc..
if u want to use it anywa,,, the only option is disc drive cleaner..
buya nice disc driive cleaner and then try using it onto ur drive, for a couple of times,, it will clean it drive and the laser,,,
if the disc doesnot work even after this,, then i am afraid,, u shud start thinking to buy a new one...

time for new cd.rom even more better buy a all in one ,dvd(rw) + & - .dvd
