Gordon Ramsay made news headlines this week by banning the use of mobiles in all 3 of his restaurants, this might well be the start of a new trend where they're banned because it's considered quite rude & antisocial to take calls on your mobile while eating at a restaurant.

As for emergencies - well mobiles haven't been around that long, what did people used to do before they had mobiles if there was an emergency? They'd have to wait until they were outside - and hope that it hadn't been a matter of life & death. If they were in the restaurant and had to make an emergency call, then the restaurant would surely allow the person to use the restaurant landline.

I am a server at a restaurant and I personally find that it distracts others and makes my job tougher. I refuse to serve someone who is on a phone, I go up to the table and turn around. Lots of people try to give me their order while they are on the phone but I tell them I will be back in a minute. When people go into public places the phone should turn to vibrate or silent, and if you need to make a call do it at an appropraite time so you are not holding up service. Will anything ever change, no. We all still here the cell phones go off in movie theaters, but people need to be courteous and respect others.

before we had mobile phones we relied on telling people where we were going,, so just letting family or friend have that info and they can phone the restaurant,, in an emergency event. Mobile phones are a great invention but also are abused in all areas ,, we let them dominate our lives and panic if we dont have it with us. They should be banned and customers to restaurants should enjoy there experience there on there own or in company with out the stress of who is going to call or not. also the different tunes that everyone has is annoying. thanks kat x

Mobiles should be banned from restaurants unless the owner of the phone is willing to enable the 'Silent' or 'Vibrate' option. If that's insufficient for someone worried about an incoming emergency call, then they should eat their meal at home.

I really don't think phones should be banned from the public restaurants, but I do think you could have a proper ring tone on the phone or on silent when your in a restaurant. I mean when a guy is with his wife and kids you want to be playing nasty music around them? What I do not approve is taking pictures on the phone inside restaurants I do think that should be banned.

yes yes yes absolutely. Mobiles shouldn't be allowed in any public place where people go to relax and be entertained. I can't stand the sight of people sitting around in pubs texting on their stupid phones instead of talking to the person they're with.
If you're that paranoid that you think there might be an emergency call, go to the toilets every so often and switch on an check for messages.
But for goodness' sake, we all managed to go out for the evening without phones clamped to our ears before they were invented! If you think someone's going to be trying to get hold of you, a babysitter or something, give them the phone number of the restaurant.

absolutely they should. People don't have any time to themselves anymore. People survived for a long time without having a way to instantly contact some one (and no, I am no a "what was good enough then is good enough now" person) It ruins peoples meals and everyone elses in the restaurant.
People have a very warped view of what is urgent, we turn off our phones in the cinema.
If you child has been run over or something, someone will find a way to contact you, give them the name of the restaurant. Anything else can wait sometimes. Meals are social things and should be enjoyed with the people who are there.

YES - They should be treated like smoking!!! Regarding emergency calls - what would happen if you were on the underground - the answer is you would check your phone later. Do that when you leave the restaurant - or go to the loo every 15 mins to check your phone. I think that's what is called getting paranoid.

That is a different situation. If you are a business person then you need your phone as well. But just to hear somebody talking or a phone ringing is annoying when you are trying to get away from the phones to have a quiet meal. The person on the phone should have the courtesy of getting up and going to an area to talk that isn't annoying to the other people. Just set the phone to vibrate and carry it in a pocket so you can feel the ring rather than everyone hearing it.

So what did people do before mobile phones were invented? People still went to restaurants - and other places!
I'd rather ban smoking in all restaurants though, that's a far worse habit.
