after turning on the computer and pointing to me as the user, all of the icons on the left hand side of the screen are highlighted. this means that i cant access any of them. If i change user and log on the icons on her page remain unchecked until i point at them. Any help would be welcome.

This can be a tricky one.
you said when logging on as another user icons OK until you point at them? does that mean they all highlight as in your log-on?

If I read this right then your problem sounds like a sticky shift key.
bang the shift keys a few times and try again, or try another keyboard.

IF I have misunderstood, just create another user profile.
go to control panel, users, then create a new one, disable your old one.
log on as the new user.
go to c:\documents & settings
you will see a number of directories one should be called your old logon another your new logon
copy all foldres and files from the folder with your old logon to the new logon folder, DO NOT COPY THE "USERDATA" FOLDER

this will give you all your favouites and desktop shortcuts and startmenu shortcuts etc.
